4.48 Sound Design
Cole Songster
Introduction
The play 4.48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane is a play written without any specified characters or location—it doesn’t even clarify what is dialogue and what is stage direction. Some things are clear—this is a show about suicide—but the unconventional script, mixed with the poetic way in which Kane writes, creates a show almost entirely for interpretation. Any production of the show becomes a deep exploration of the text and the vision the director crafts alongside their actors and designers. When this show was performed at Knox, in the Fall Term of 2024, we approached this show by emphasizing the breaking down of the mind, splitting the dialogue amongst three characters, all of which inhabit the same brain. So when tasked with building the sound design for this show, I used the broken down skeleton of a piano, stored within the basement of the Ford Center of Fine Arts, spending hours alongside the instrument and exploring the limits of the sounds it can make. The instrument—dusty, forgotten, missing the parts that make it whole—resembles the protagonist of the show. And by hearing it surround the space the audience is watching from, it brings them into the brain of the character.
